Tips to Modify A Bunk Bed

One of the best and easiest ways of converting of modifying a bunk bed is to procure it in an unfinished or semi-finished form. You may customize it by choosing your own paint color. Moreover, it is the easiest way for those customers who are price conscious; they may take a second hand furniture item and can refinish it according to a new trendy style to overcome the old, warn-out look of the furniture. You may update your existing furniture to a fresh look in the same way. Here, I have suggested some steps to make over the traditional looks of your bunk beds. Have a look!
Paint selection:
Most of the times, you may purchase childrens beds that are semi-finished and you may personalize it by painting it with your own customized paint color, scheme and pattern. It is the way to adopt healthy paints that are non-toxic and latex-based. If your kid is quiet old to contribute in the selection then involve it too; because ultimately he is the one who is going to use the bed. Allow him to participate in the bed selection, paint selection and painting process.
Sand the Furniture:
Before starting painting bunk bed with new paint, you need to sand all the surfaces of the bed so that you may paint on a smooth finished surface. You need to sand it twice; firstly with a fine sandpaper and secondly with a very fine sand paper. After each sanding, you need to wipe out all the sand.
Apply Primer:
The base coat of the paint, which is the first coat, must be done with a special paint named as primer. If you skip this step then result will be very poor; you will end up with an uneven finished surface. You need this step so that you may cover the imperfections of wooden or metallic material like knots and burrs. Make sure that the primer is applied to all surfaces thoroughly and apply it using long even strokes. Let it dry; when it gets completely dry sand the bed with very fine sand paper again and wipe out the sand and dust.
Apply Paint:
It is the final step of painting process, it is called top coating. When painting the topcoat you need to make sure that the strokes applied are even and thorough. You should move strokes in one direction, do not make it back and forth. The optimal way is to move strokes in the direction of wood grains. Let it dry and inspect it after getting dry. If primer coat reflects from any point, you need to paint the whole bunk bed again. Before applying the second coat you need to sand it first and then make it dust free.
Make an Addition:
To give a new look to your bunk beds you need to make additions to its.  You may add a storage unit under the lower bunk or you may add shelves at the sides of the bunks. If you are too much ambitious then you may also add matching chest of drawers along the end. You may add hanging accessories such as bags to the bunk bed to enrich the look. These bags may be filled with story books, dolls, toys, stuffed animals etc.
These are some simple tips which will add an element of freshness to your old or second hand bunk bed. You must try it before you are going to purchase a new one.
